Sogenannte alte Sorten haben das Nachsehen. Rund 2000 Apfelsorten gibt es in Deutschland. Sie tragen Namen wie Finkenwerder Herbstprinz und sind in keinem Supermarkt zu finden. Dabei sind sie oft viel gesünder als die klassische Supermarktware. Das lässt sich sogar am Polyphenol-Gehalt messen. Polyphenole stärken die Abwehrkräfte, helfen auch gegen chronische Krankheiten wie Rheuma. Im Labor lassen wir Äpfel in einer Stichprobe untersuchen. Drei klassische Supermarktsorten und drei alte Sorten, die es oft nur noch in Hofläden zu kaufen gibt. Das Laborergebnis ist eindeutig: Der Polyphenol-Gehalt der alten Sorten ist deutlich höher.

A few large companies now dominate the seed sector. They breed plants to be uniform, and use patents to defend their usage rights and profits. This squeezes out biodiversity, stifles innovation and restrains the capacity of agriculture to adapt to climate change.

Open-source licensed seed is available for everyone. You may multiply the seed, sell it, pass it on, breed with it and enhance it without any restrictions. The licence grants new users the same rights that the previous owner enjoyed.
