November 2019 die Freigabeempfehlung für Gpg4win, Version 3.x, und Gpg4KDE zur Übertragung und Verarbeitung von nationalen Verschlusssachen bis einschließlich Geheimhaltungsgrad VS-NUR FÜR DEN DIENSTGEBRAUCH (VS-NfD), RESTREINT UE/EU RESTRICTED und NATO RESTRICTED erteilt (BSI-VS-10400, BSI-VSA-10412).

Die Windows-Software Gpg4win (GNU Privacy Guard for Windows) installiert ein Plug-in, das E- Mails in Microsoft Outlook signiert, ver- und entschlüsselt. Darüber hinaus kann Gpg4win Dateien und Ordner im Windows Explorer ver- und entschlüsseln. Unter Linux ist die Kombination aus GnuPG und KMail, dem Standard-Mailprogramm der Desktopumgebung KDE, freigegeben. Die Kernkomponente unter Windows und Linux ist GnuPG, eine Software, die genau wie die anderen genannten Programme unter einer freien Lizenz steht, das heißt, das BSI konnte in diesem Fall den Quellcode aller Komponenten einsehen und prüfen.

#^Plasma: A Safe Haven for Windows 7 Refugees

A fully functional Plasma desktop with a Windows 7 theme. Microsoft will stop providing updates for Windows 7 on January 14 2020. There won't be any more patches that correct bugs or even dangerous vulnerabilities. This will leave Windows 7 users exposed to all sorts of bad stuff. But that is not a huge concern for Microsoft. With this move, Redmond hopes to encourage users to upgrade to Windows 10. But why should we care? Maybe because Windows currently holds 77% of the global desktop market share (all Linux desktops combined hold less than 2%). Of that 77%, nearly 30% belongs to Windows 7.

Helping people regain control over their systems and protecting their data is precisely what Free Software communities do best, making this the perfect opportunity to help Windows 7 users upgrade to something much better: To the Plasma desktop!

If you want features, bells and whistles, and configurability in spades, your best choice of desktop is probably KDE's Plasma desktop. Navigating and discovering all that's on offer can be a challenge, though.
While many user interface designers advocate simplicity and simplified decision-making for users (which often results in no decision-making at all), the KDE community has stubbornly gone the other way, jam-packing all manner of features and doodads into its Plasma desktop

I have some objections to the test case and the test results, but the rest he writes about #KDE I can support.

Unfortunately I need to look for a replacement for my Jolla phone, so when I read this announcement I thought this is a wonderful news. But I have quite stomach with their website. For example I didn't knew that it is still possible to have newsletter registration without double-opt-in.

I really hope there will be a mobile device with KDE soon. I am waiting for this for so long already. The Spark/Vivaldi tablet was just amazing and the idea of KDE on mobile device really got me the first time I heard about it. It must have been at CeBIT 2012 where I hold this wonderful small red KDE tablet in my hand and I was really impressed. It felt so common and perfect match. Was a really sad disappointment to see this project fail.
From my experiences in the last 6 years I am quite reserved about Necuno Solutions so far. There is really not much information yet and I think the best guess at the moment is still with Purism Librem 5. But I still have the impression KDE is not more than a 2nd class citizen. They have more than enough to do, to get one stack ready at all at the moment.

BTW, Monday evening is FSFE Fellowship Meeting in Bonn. A Librem 5 dev wants to present a devboard.

By a strange coincidece the news broke this morning that RHEL is deprecating KDE. The real surprise here is that RHEL supported KDE all. Back in the 90s they were entirely against KDE and put lots of effort into our friendly rivals Gnome. It made some sense since at the time Qt was under a not-quite-free licence and there’s no reason why a company would want to support another company’s lock in as well as shipping incompatible licences. By the time Qt become fully free they were firmly behind Gnome.

Privacy is the new challenge for Free Software. KDE is in a unique position to offer users a complete software environment that helps them to protect their privacy. KDE, being community-driven and user-focused, has the opportunity to put privacy on top of the agenda, arguably, being in this position, KDE has the obligation to do this, in the interest of the users.

The effect is expected to be two-fold:
* Offer users the tools to protect privacy and to lead a private and safe digital life without compromising their identity, exposing their habits and communications
* Setting a high standard and example for others to follow, define the state of the art of privacy protection in the age of big data and force others to follow suit, thereby increasing pressure on the whole industry and eco-system to protect users privacy better

This one with Plasma Mobile would be really nice. The only combination so far I would replace SailfishOS and Jolla with.

KDE develops Plasma Mobile, a free, open and full-featured graphical environment for mobile devices. Plasma Mobile has been tested on several off-the-shelf devices. However, most smartphones include hardware that requires proprietary software to work. This clashes with KDE’s principles of freedom and openness. It also makes building difficult, since many details of the hardware are kept secret, preventing complete access to all the components.

#^KDE and Slimbook Release a Laptop for KDE Fans

Today KDE is proud to announce the immediate availability of the KDE Slimbook, a KDE-branded laptop that comes pre-installed with Plasma and KDE Applications (running on Linux) and is assured to work with our software as smoothly as possible.
The KDE Slimbook allows KDE to offer our users a laptop which has been tested directly by KDE developers, on the exact same hardware and software configuration that the users get, and where any potential hardware-related issues have already been ironed out before a new version of our software is shipped to them. This gives our users the best possible way to experience our software, as well as increasing our reach: The easier it is to get our software into users' hands, the more it will be used.
Furthermore, the KDE Slimbook, together with KDE neon, offers us a unique opportunity to isolate and fix issues that users have with our software. When something in Plasma, a KDE Application or some software using a KDE Framework does not work as intended for a user, there are at least three layers that can cause the problem:
  The KDE software itself
  The operating system
  The hardware or its drivers
Of course KDE always tries to reduce bugs in our software as much as possible. Problems can occur in any of the aforementioned layers, however, and often times it is difficult for us to pin-point exactly where things are going wrong. Last year, KDE neon joined the KDE community with the promise to give us control over the operating system layer. This does not mean we won't make our software available on other distributions or operating systems, of course, but it allows us to eliminate that layer as a possible source of a problem.
This left us still with one layer we had zero control over, though: The hardware layer.
Fast-forward to late last year, when the Spanish laptop retailer Slimbook approached KDE with the idea to offer KDE-branded laptops that come pre-installed with Plasma and KDE Applications. We were excited about the idea, and put our designers and developers to the task of creating a branding for such a device and making sure that KDE neon runs without any hardware-related issues on it.
For now, the KDE Slimbook will always come pre-installed with KDE neon, but we are open to offering other distributions that come pre-installed with Plasma for customers to choose from.
The KDE Slimbook is for people who love KDE software, regardless of whether or not they are active contributors to KDE.

Open Hardware for KDE

From its beginning, KDE has been a leader in innovation in free (libre) and open source software (FLOSS), but there is a threat to that leadership in one of the fastest growing areas of technology. The advantages of free and open development and use are clear for software; now closed and proprietary strategies have become standard in other kinds of technology. The need for technology freedom has moved from software to other more corporate-controllable areas—notably hardware and the Internet. As was the case when KDE started, community-developed, freedom-oriented technology is necessary to break the stranglehold of large companies that are more committed to managers and investors than to users. But this won’t be easy and it can’t be left to a few people. The entire KDE Community has a stake in the outcome. For that matter, this should be a concern to anyone who develops free and open software, anyone who uses it, anyone who benefits from it. And that includes just about everyone using technology today. New hardware has been announced that addresses the need for openness beyond software. Community help is needed to support a generous, far-sighted open hardware project involving mostly KDE people and certainly following KDE principles. Please consider contributing financially to open hardware for KDE.

Just tried #kde-connect with my #Jolla and the native Android app. Haven't tried it yet with Android itself, because my tablet is at the repair. Not all functions seem to work, but it is a really nice feature and interesting integration. I get a notice on my desktop when I receive a call and also the control of amaroK is working nicely. Sharing clipboard and files I haven't found out yet how it works, or maybe it is not working with Jolla, like also the battery status seems not to be available. The shared notice module get's not loaded on the Jolla because of incompatible Android version. Would really love to see this as a native Jolla app!
