With Germany's last black coal mine closing today near Bottrop in the Ruhr industrial belt, the former mining region promises to transform into a cultural powerhouse.

I have family in Bottrop and the brother of my grandma was working under ground. But it is hard to understand the mindset and nostalgia. I mean, it will cost 200 million Euro per year, so that this area will not get flooded, so that ground water does not get poisoned, etc. as long as people want to live in this area!
