Nicola Baumann and Insa Thiele-Eich are the winners of the "Die Astronautin" competition. One of them will be the first German woman in space - if the initiative can scrape together 40 million euros in funding.


Why you need a private initiative and crowdfunding to get a German astronaut into space? Because she is female? Germany 2017? o_O

Interesting question, especially since, at least in the US, russia, and china (probably india too?) the private companies pull from the same pool of astronauts as the government typically. I would think ESA would be the same. Doesn't Aitbus have huge ESA contracts?
